to the place at which the Convicts had landed; about half an hour afterwards a second party of police arrived quickly followed by several other parties. There are two large Boats at the Tail used for carrying Convicts. A Boats Crew of ten Convicts was told off at the time of commencing labor on the 21st April. These Boats were bathing from the place of work to the vicinity of Anchorage, from which the stores have to be brought.

Near the twenty Convict boatmen formed part of the gang of 121 Convicts employed to carry stone. There was a police Boat accompanying them, with the usual crew of one Portuguese and four Chinese constables. Neither of the two stone Boats returned before the breakfast hour, the whole portion of the 121 Convicts having marched into Breakfast.

The method has been that the two stone boats, when laden with stone, have been skulled and rowed to the place at which the stone had to be deposited, by the Pen Convicts forming the crew of each boat, with a Turnkey in charge and accompanied by a Police Boat. The general rule is that the police Boat shall remain near one of the Stone Boats, and I have been in charge of both Boats.
