I saw that the stone Boat having the Convicts on board reached the mainland before the Boat in which were Tumkeys "French and Jones" and I saw the Convicts land and ascend the Hill; at about one o'clock the Tumkeys French and Jones returned to the Convict Hulk bringing with them the dead Bodies of two Convicts who had been shot by them; later in the day the dead body of another who had been drowned was brought from the place at which the escape occurred.
I placed the Convicts on shore in the Dining Room of the Warden and the Convicts under strong guard on board the Hulk were placed under hatches; on taking account of the Convicts I found that one hundred and ... had escaped, inclusive of the three that were dead.
At about eleven A.M. a perfect escape signal was made the halyard having been repaired, a delay took place in making the repair as no person could at first be found to go aloft, at about half past 11 A.M.
