place on the mainland, at which the escaped Convicts landed, noting that the time occupied in crossing was fifteen minutes, they then proceeded from the latter place to the Convict Hulk, the time occupied in doing being Eighteen minutes and a half. The relative positions of the three points may be understood by considering the Convict Hulk as the apex of a triangle, the other two (viz. the point of escape and the point of landing) being the base.
The Board proceeded to examine Witnesses.
George L. Tomlin. I am Superintendent of the Jail at Stone Cutters' Island. The morning state of the Convicts on the morning of the 21st April shows a total of 314. The Jail staff, only one being sick in Hospital, was all present, viz. 1 Warden, 1 Head Turnkey, 5 Turnkeys, 1 Clerk, and 1 Chinese Interpreter. I produce the morning Labor Report of that day. I also produce the morning state of the Police Detachment doing duty at the Jail on that day, showing a total of 2 Sergeants & Constables European 7, Indians 24, Reserve Guard 4, Portuguese 1, Water Police 6, Chinese 15, Total 56, and 2 Police Boats; one Boat was deficient, being under repair at Hongkong.
