a Bound to institute a searching inquiry into all the circumstances connected with this unfortunate affair, and will in one course communicate the result of their investigation to your Grace.

Immediately on receiving information of the escape, communicated with the Authorities at Canton, and the Magistrates of the neighbouring Districts. They have promised their assistance, but as yet none of the escaped Prisoners have been recaptured.

The Senior Naval Officer has been good enough at my request to anchor a Gun Boat in the immediate vicinity of the Stock. This precaution entails neither inconvenience nor expense upon the Imperial Government, and I thought it desirable in consequence of a communication which I received from Mr. Tomlin the Superintendent of the Stock, a Copy of which is enclosed.
