Jt appears that a working party of Convicts, while employed on the Island in procuring stone for the foundations of the new Gaol, succeeded in overpowering and disarming the men in charge of them, and escaped in a stone Boat to the main-land.

One Convict was afterwards found drowned, and two others were shot by the Turnkeys. A Coroner's Inquest was held on the bodies, and the Jury returned in the case of the two last a verdict of Justifiable homicide.

From all the information I have been able as yet to obtain, I fear that several of the precautions enjoined by the Regulations for the safe custody of the Convicts were neglected. The plan of escape had most probably been organized for some time, and the vigilance of the Turnkeys and Constables appears to have slackened in consequence of the previous orderly and obedient demeanour of the Convicts.
