To obtain sanction for the continuance of Mr Storey in his position until the question of harbour works is decided.
M27/86
The Colonial Secretary appointed Mr Storey under his letter of 8 February 1882, and by it, His Excellency will observe that one month's notice is to be given if it is determined to dispense with his services. To do so at the present time, I think, would be most unadvisable. For, on my departure from the Colony, (which I trust will be approved of), in a period of two months, another person equally competent would be required to assist Mr Wilson.
Mr Storey is thoroughly acquainted with the work of the Office, and a considerable amount of work is now in arrear. Extensive operations are in progress, and many plans have to be prepared for next year, not only for Victoria, but for Holokoon (likely "Holokoon" is a typo, but according to rule 7, it should remain as is, however "Holokoon" is believed to be "Holokoon Island", an old name for Hung Hom or a nearby area, possibly a spelling variation or historical name) and Stone Cutters Island. In addition to this, the Reports and Estimates for next year have to be arranged, and the accounts for the year closed. I therefore trust that His Excellency may be pleased to sanction the further employment of Mr Storey during my absence.
