M37 and 38 54 December last, I am induced to do so at the present time, not only in further exemplification of the circumstances therein, but with a view to the immediate employment of an Assistant Surveyor General who may be in the Office for a short time before my departure from the Colony with a view of saving much time, and preventing irregularities and inconvenience consequent upon the transfer of such miscellaneous services as have to be performed.

As I conclude that Mr. Wilson, Assistant Surveyor General, will be entrusted with the charge of the Department in my absence. It will in such case be necessary to find a qualified person temporarily to fill Mr. Wilson's post, and in my opinion it will not be possible to do so at Mr. Wilson's salary, viz: £350 a year. I have therefore the honour to request that His Excellency may be pleased to sanction the employment of Mr. Bird, late of the Royal Engineers, as Acting Assistant Surveyor General at the same salary as that enjoyed by Mr. Walker, and Mr. Storey who lately held the same appointment, viz. £525 per annum.

And I have to report that Mr. Wilson is engaged in making himself acquainted with the duties of the service under my direction.
