Mr. Kinder under date 8th January last, that the cost of the Mint, exclusive of the large item of building, will amount to about double the abovementioned sum.

I have no doubt that a strict examination will be made by your Grace's department into the necessity for the proposed expenditure before it is sanctioned but I may mention that the mint is experimental, it would I think be safer that it should not be started on too large a scale, but that the laboratory works should be constructed with a view to their subsequent extension as may from time to time be required, by circumstances arising from the extension of business.
