Men avoided the worst effects of Stinkpots thrown down the hatchway by creeping away to another part of the vessel. Sometime after the cessation of noise, they went on deck and saw two junks making off at a short distance. The master, the 2nd Mates (Danes) and an Englishman were found lying killed or desperately wounded.

They then pulled to the Main Sand with another Dane, a Swede, and two Chinese Boys, who had also escaped on board but had not attracted the notice of the Pirates, but who had no doubt supposed the men below to have been destroyed by Stinkpots - perceiving them they gave chase, but fortunately, without success. One Dane was left badly wounded in the boat, and the Swede and one of the Chinese Boys were lost sight of among the Chinese Boys on the Hills.

On returning to the Sea side they were met by Ally. Hook, who kindly conveyed them to the "Princess Charlotte". I at once dispatched a boat with a Medical Officer to the assistance of the wounded man, and communicated with the Captain Superintendent of Police, with whom one of the Danes was leaving. The other two men and the Chinese Boy (who appears to be personally acquainted with many of the Pirates) will be sent out in the "Opium" as soon as she can get under steam, to recover the missing men and endeavour to capture the Pirates.
