years on

At this place large bodies of natives establish themselves; a variety of nuisances exist which tend more or less to affect the salubrity of districts, for some time after the first establishment of the Colony, and until drains were made, much sickness prevailed amongst natives and Europeans also, but I am happy to say that year by year a steady advance has been made with drainage.

As the works progressed, sickness has decreased and a degree of healthiness is now exhibited amongst all classes which, but for effective drainage, could hardly have been expected in a large City with so many persons living in close proximity; only a few years ago, it would have been considered quite unattainable.

I have been induced to make these remarks upon sanitary matters for the purpose of explaining my views in general regards to drainage works here, which, having been effective for so many years, notwithstanding the variety of difficulties I have had to contend against in designing as well as carrying them out, I should be sorry to see changed to the experimental and expensive mode suggested by the majority of the Sanitary Commission.
