I have used teak wood beams with iron bars in front of stone gratings as heretofore, the stone accumulating at the back of these gratings is removed from time to time by day's work, after each flood and a party of men are employed to work during the flood.
So as to facilitate as far as possible the discharge of rain water from unpaved areas, to direct the water where necessary, and to clear any of the pipe holes, gullies, gratings or other sinks that may become blocked up by silt or other material. For instance, in the new districts of Sai Ying Poon and West Point, an increase of expenditure under this head is demanded not only for such services as above referred to, but also for the repair of masonry damaged. The expenditure last year was $1000; it is proposed this year to authorize $1200 to provide against the probable necessity for further services consequent upon the extension of the City drains, and to amend an application for funds under a Supplementary Estimate.
