This item in the Colonial Estimates is intended to provide probable mason work for the general repairs demanded to side channels throughout in relaying Sunday Victoria, these repairs are principally required in the new streets where settlements occur and drains are made causing irregularities in the channel to that eastward surface water, together with the arrangement of levels on such steep ground it is necessary for Government to execute some house entrances render for same.

for convenience of pedestrians and to replace broken ...

The amount voted for the service using the sidepath or channels or same authorised last year is the amount which has hitherto been found sufficient for all wants, but the increased number of streets in the city and the demand for miscellaneous services of the agent renders it desirable to keep the same amount $500 available for future services so as to avoid a supplementary vote of Council. These services are of necessity executed by days labour, and by purchase of materials to supply broken spouts.
