And it leaves both the composition & weight of the copper coins to the same discretion. I had hoped that the public of Hong Kong ought to have been assisted in identifying true coins "speedily" from the false by some public notification.

Whether the Govt should not be in a position to furnish some much needed information, so it should be added, but this department is without any information as to the weight & composition of the coins beyond that obtained by the translation of this notification. vide 169. (6638) Jan 4.

The Colonial Office of the 26th/March (in 6092/163) applied to the "Mint" for specimens & for a statement of the weight & composition of each coin - silver & copper, but did not succeed in obtaining either the specimens or the information desired. And it appears that this department is consequently at present in the unsatisfactory position of not knowing precisely what coins are current, have been expressly made for trading & are now circulating there.
