Majesty's Government and in reply instructed to request that we are pleased to defer sending out any orders until an opportunity of laying before the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury a full explanation on the points on which they have formed an opinion adverse to the Bank, as the Directors feel confident that they will be able to satisfy their Lordships that the Agra Bank (which was incorporated by Royal Charter) has equal right with the other Banks mentioned to issue its own Notes at Hong Kong.
The Directors most earnestly beg your Grace to prevent the injury that would otherwise be inflicted upon the Agra Bank, and the Directors feel assured that your Grace will bear in mind that the Bank has been deliberately advised by the Law Officers of the Crown upon a perusal of the Bank's Charter granted by Her Majesty that the Bank has an undoubted legal right to issue its own Notes.
We are,
Your Grace's Obedient humble Servants,
Uptors Johnson Shipton
His Grace the Duke of Newcastle
Colonial Office
Whitehall.
