Under these circumstances the Duke of Newcastle has consented to our ensuring to Mr Thornton such portion of his half salary as may become due to him from the 1st of August inclusive, and to his agent in Hong Kong to refund to the Colonial Government any amount that may have been paid to him since the 31st July on account of Mr Thornton's half salary, on your forwarding this order to this office, it will at once be transmitted to the Governor.
In the mean time I have informed Mr Thornton that he will be held personally responsible for the amount involved by any double payment on account of his salary.
