That immediately before my departure from Hongkong on sick leave, an Address was presented to me by a Deputation acting for the Mercantile Community, which Address, with a copy of my reply thereto, I send herewith. A further Address was, on the following day, presented to me by Mandarins and other chief persons representing the Chinese Municipality.
I append a translation of this Address, together with my reply thereto.
In presenting the Brass, the Chief Mandarin referred to a Wason of Clack... Locking Glass, Water, and a Litter Cup, made in the form of a ... Arm, all from Bombay, with trinkets which were placed on the table. These were referred to in the Address.
