Kong informing him that in
the opinion of Her Majesty's
Government the time has
Arrived when that Colony may
justly be called upon to contri-
bute towards the cost of its Military
defence. And proposing therefore that for five years commencing
on the 1st January 1865 an Annual
payment of £20,000 should be
required from the Colonial Govern-
ment on this account.
In reply I am to request that
You will acquaint the Duke of
Newcastle that Earl de Grey has
no reason to doubt that Mr
Grace has correctly Estimated
the probable Force to be maintained
in the Colony, and his
Lordship concurs in the instruction
which it is proposed to address
to the Governor.
