7. I pointed out that it was a case in which the public "Esprit" of the Community should be appealed to, and that this Government could not be expected to provide everything on the occasion.
8. Accordingly a Subscription List was circulated which was headed by the Government Contribution of $100, and it is this sum of which I ask your Grace to confirm the expenditure.

I should add that of the whole number saved as above stated, the large Majority are reported to have been taken in the direction of Macao, and as several Portuguese and foreign Vessels are said to have been Kidnapping on that coast, fears have been entertained for them, in consequence of which I have forwarded for the information of the Governor of Macao such intelligence as has been furnished me.
