had eighty two, sometimes seventy and the lowest number fifty. I recollect that on one occasion the long boat carried eighty six. I believed that the long boat could safely carry the number placed on board.

I now know anything which any want of safety could have been in-vagined excepting that about six days back the boat was nearly upset when the Convicts were crowding on board, a turnkey was on board the boat at that time and restrained the Convicts.

About that time the Superintendent gave a verbal order that only between fifty and sixty Convicts should be conveyed at one time in the long boat. I did not consider this a rigid rule and no definite number of Convicts was mentioned, usually since that order a less number of Convicts have been conveyed at one time.

In the evening of the day I was on the off side of the ship to that at which the boat came alongside. I had a hand at that time. Since the accident I have had a verbal order from the Superintendent not to permit more than ... convict to ascend at a time.
