… danger : I believe that if the Turnkey had not stopped the crowding of the prisoners as they got up the ladder to the boat, the prisoners would have fallen into the sea. It was usual for the Turnkey to be at the top of the ladder to prevent the prisoners coming up too quickly; it was more necessary on this occasion than usual because the boat was alongside the ship and the prisoners were unwell.
I think the Turnkey was rather violent; he appeared angry and struck his stick on the ladder. He also struck the prisoners coming up the side with the stick. I never observed any previous instance of there being danger of the boat overturning when alongside the ship; the prisoners were able to get on board without difficulty.
I was on board on the evening of the 25th because it was calm and there was little wind. The day before it was raining and blowing hard, and I then imagined there was little danger of the boat upsetting, but I never thought there would be an accident.
