Meeting

The Committee held their first meeting on 16 January 1863, and continued their sittings at intervals until the 29th ultimo.

In taking evidence, the Committee availed themselves of the local knowledge of Captain Quin, Superintendent of Police; Mr. Jarman, Deputy Inspector of Nuisances under the Colonial Surgeon; Mr. Nielson, Inspector of Nuisances under the Surveyor General; and Mr. Ellis, Deputy Inspector of Markets.

With the exception of communications received by letter from Messrs. Gibbs, Livingston & Co. complaining of nuisances (specially affecting themselves) and a representation from eight (8) householders and residents in D'Aguilar Street and Queen's Road, calling attention to the noxious effluvia from the sewers at the junction of those streets, the Committee had no response to their advertisement of 10 January 1863, published in all the local papers for information.
