you
that I have received no communication from Mr Thornton for the last two mails, the last letter I received from him is dated September 8th in which he does not mention his having corresponded with the home authorities relative to the stoppage
of
his salary,
but on the contrary
requests me to advance the whole
of
his six
months salary he had solicited for several mails previous. In compliance with this request I sent him four months pay and intended to have sent
him the
remaining
two by
this
mail had I not received
communication
by
you
of
the 19th instant
You will perceive that
having remitted him four months pay, and received only three months, I am out of pocket one month's
pay on
his account.
In conclusion I beg to remark that it seems rather paradoxical that after assuring His Grace The Duke of Newcastle that his salary had been stopped in Hong Kong, he should give
an order on me for
repayment of salaries paid on his account.
