S. These are the only two occasions previous to the instance under notice, so far as I am aware, in which gifts of value were offered to and received by officers of this Government.
9. The case of Mr. Stubline, I quote from recollection as the matter was not made public, though Sir George Bowen, on reference, will, I am sure, remember the fact. The case of Colonel Caine was equally open to public knowledge, for the gift of a Screen or tablet was depicted in the Illustrated London News.
