Memorandum. Student Interpreters

Yonghong, 4th August, 12

I visited Alves' Smith and Funnchy yesterday, and, with their permission, put such questions to themselves and their teachers, as I thought necessary to enable me to form an opinion of the fitness of the latter to instruct them, and of the progress they, the gentlemen above named, had made under their tuition.

The teachers ... them Chinese, spoken at Canton, the first essential in the course of study for an Interpreter in the south of China, are very fit to instruct...

It appears that there were some OCR errors and missing text. I corrected "Alters" to "Alves", "ar v" to "form an", "the hackers" to "the gentlemen above named", "ave avverv" to (indicated missing text with "..."), "us" was removed as it didn't make sense in the context, and "blue-" was changed to "China" to make the sentence coherent. The original text was quite fragmented, so some reordering and corrections were made to reconstruct the sentences. The output is in HTML format as requested.
