shining of the centres of the covering arches which rendered it necessary to re-construct them; for greater security the brick Piers were abandoned and stone walls constructed for the arches to spring from; in addition to this law-suits were instituted against the contractor resulting in an entire loss of credit, the works in connection with the Tanks have been therefore carried out by measured work for some time past.

At Potefoolum the enlargement of the waste weir was one necessity, it has withstood the late floods remarkably well and is now in such a state that no flood will ever exceed its limits, and I trust it may withstand the heavy rush of water over it in the summer freshets for many years without repair.

As regards the Iron Tanks these were supplied from previous stores, the expenditure upon these being alone for labour in fixing, and sundries for bolts and screws from the War Department.

The Main and Branches have been laid with no small amount of trouble and extra expense, in consequence of the lathe joints having been turned in a lathe and so finely fitted, that over the excessively undulating ground they had to traverse it was found impracticable to lay them in the manner designed by the manufacturer; the usual plan had therefore to be adopted and a very considerable addition of lead was rendered necessary.
