The island has been cleared of its late residents and compensation to the amount of $3,211 has been disbursed to the squatters who have been obliged to leave. The enclosed document gives particulars of this sum.
I now have the honor to report that on the 15th instant, everything being reported ready, 280 long-sentence Chinese Prisoners were placed on board the Hulk and towed by a Gunboat to the position previously marked off at Stone Cutters' Island.

The Staff and guards are also provided, and the men have begun daily work under the Superintendence of a Sapper, lent by the Military Authorities.

The total cost of the Hulk with the first purchase included has been heavy, as will be seen by the accompanying Memorandum, but the purchase, fittings, etc. were all done by Tender, and in each case the lowest Tender was taken.
The current monthly Expenditure as at present authorized, is $527.33 per Mensem.
