I do myself the honor to transmit to you for the consideration of His Excellency the Acting Governor, a copy of a letter, which I have received from the Clerk and Sorters of this Department setting forth that their salaries are inadequate to meet their expenses, on account of the increase in the price of the necessaries of life, and the high rents they are called upon to pay.

The Honorable,
W. H. Alexander, Esqrs
