(b) What is the major problem in the world's
lumbering industry?
(c) Suggest methods for roreat and tinker
conservation.
(a) The North Pacific coast Region is one of one
world's chief areas of Boftwood timbar production. A broad belt of coniferous forest, mostly in the shape of the giant, redwoods of northwestern California and the Douglas firs af Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, stand on the mountaia slopes momtly. Exploitation of timber is fairly easy owing to the presence of relatively few species of trees (e.g. pine, fir, spruce, and larch), their occurrence in homogeneous standa, a more ealthy clinatë and the availability of water transport of timber to the sawmills.
The Douglas Tir subregion of 0.4
and
Washington is the most important commercially of all the forests of North America, Itz timber is marketed throughout the world and is used for structural timbers, flooring, doors, piling and railway sleepers, The ease of logging and transport in the Puget Sound area and along the lower courses of the Columbia and Fraser rivers have encouraged lumberman to penerate further inland. The trees are felled at the beginning of winter, The log are draw easily across the slippery snow to the nearest river, and piled on the ice. In spring when the ice melts, the logs float away down the river to the sewmille,
Longview in Washington on the Columbia Hiver is one of the most important savilling toms in the region. Tosoma and Vancouver are important centres for the manufacture of papar pulp but this industry is greatly hampered by distance from the large markets or pastern U.3.A. If the still buga timber resources of this area are preserved and used wisely, this coastal area should continue to produce a large part of tha timber requirements of Earth America'.
repletion of timber by Tumbering operations plus ruthless. clearing for agriculture and grazing, and the devastating effect of forest fires have together created a major conservation problem. All countries of the world are using their timber at a far greater rate than nature can replenish it. Most countries lag behind in replenishing timper supplies, There is a danger of near exhaustion of timber resourcas in many countries. (a) Nethods suggested for forest and timber
conservation are:
(1) Control of lumbering operations so that
sufficient standing timber is left to ennara-natural re-growth;
iii) Control and protection against forest
[ fires.
(iii) Re-af crestation - planting. satural
specias or exotic species in suitable. areas.
(iv). Establishment of State forests under
government control through the advioa of its forestry experts.
(♥) Study and control of tree diss8262.

Atlantic West Wind Drift. These provide sheltered anchorses for the fichine vessels,
Norway's prozmity to une genae inqustrial populations of the European' countries is an. obvious advantage. Together with development in land and water transport, it is possible for the catch to be distributed with speed and efficiency to these potential markets. The channel between the coast and the numerous. islands, the 'Skerry Guard' which lie immediately off the western Norwegian coast is a relatively Bheltered highway for shinoine,

under government encouragement and large. private enterprising, Norwegian fishing vessels are enormous in size, well equipped and scientifically run. Stavanger claims to have the largest fish-canning installations in the world. With its floating factory ships, Norway leads the world in whaling, Ita whalers are found as far away as the Antarctica.

The Chief Ucean routes of the Atlanti
Snapping routes routes across the Atlantio have longer historic standing than the trans-Pacific routes and therefore carry more trade than the latter. The most frequented route is the North Atlantic route which join
north-western Europe and north-easterp. United States. Several routes spread out fanvisa from Europe: to the West Indies, the
Panema and the Canaries whenoo' ships may travel south-westwards to South America (10 Janeire and Busnos Aires) or south-eastwards. to South Africa (Cape Town). Another group of routes radiate from the New York region to tha Iediterranean, South Africa, eastern South iserica and the Panama, However, there is no important trade route in the South Atlantic because the two southern continents, South Africa and South America, produce very much the same food product and raw materials and there is little scope for interchange and
trade.
- The North Atlantis route is an important link between north-western Europe and North ̈ Aserion both of which are highly-developed, industrialised and densely populated. At the American end of this route, the major termini are New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, Montreal, and Halifax. The Eurospan porta at the other end are London, Liverpool, Southampton, Bublin, Antwerp, Amsterdam ̧: Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Goteborg, Cherburg. Since both eastern North America, and north-west Europe are manufacturing areas, the trade in manufactured goods is smaller than the trade in good and raw materials. Consequently, the westward bound cargo in less than that carried eastwards which consists of timber, wood pulp, wheat, meat, iron-ore, eta. This route carries more passenger traffic than any other ses route.
