REFLEX ACTION.
When the Spinal Cord receives a message from à sensory
organ and orders an immediate action to take place by the muscle or gland without consulting the brain first
it is called A REFLEX-ACTION e.g.winking of eye when a finger is suddenly thrust towards the sye; eudden with drawal of hand from a hot iron plate.
The Sotaal Cord therefore acts as a secondary brain and controls the actions of the body in relation to envirao ment and eurvival.
「MECHANISM OF REFLEX ACTION: When a sense organ or HECEPTOF is stimulated the sensation is transmitted by the SENSORY NERVE FIBRE or afferent nerve to the GREY MATTEK of the SPINAL CORD. This impulse is then transmitted by the
ASSOCIATION NERVE across. synapse to the MOTOR NEURONE which sends out an impulse along the MOTOR NERVE FIBRE or afferent nerve. to the MUSCLE, ORGAN or GLAND (which-1 ever is concerned) OR EFFECTOR ORGAN which reacts acrome ding to the situation.
All this takes place within a fraction of a second. An Impulse was also sent to the brain at the same time but its speed in reaching the brain is slower and it comes to know after the action has taken place Therefore reflex actions are of great importance for self-preser- vation.as well as adaptation to environment of an animal Examples of some reflex actions arei

In the chapter of Reflex act ion it was explained that\ when a hand touches a hot object without our knowledge} it is instantaneously withdrawn without our knowing i and we come to know only after all this han happened, The same is the case when one passes by a stall selling
