We have referred our Agents in Paris to the treaty between Great Britain and China of 25th January 1843 and have informed them that the Sovereignty of the island is vested in the Governor and Council, and that English law is administered there by a Chief Justice. We are however informed by them that a letter from your Lordship or one from the Under Secretaries of State for the Colonies to be legalised by a Notary will be the most effectual mode of proving the facts to the satisfaction of the French Courts.
