a of considerable breadth, running somewhat in a northerly direction, and perhaps sufficiently extensive for the erection of large buildings. Its position, however, is not desirable inasmuch as the Commissariat Hill, already alluded to, interrupts in some degree both the sea aspect and the S.W. wind, besides which, it is nearly encompassed on the East and West by a belt of low-lying ground, now nearly marshy. Moreover, previous experience proves that it was not in the spring of 1860 a healthy site for a camp. Indeed, owing to the prevalence of bowel complaints among the men, it was deemed necessary to remove the camp of the Loodianah Regt to a more healthy locality.
