which employment he made himself useful and displayed such recommendations and ability that, on his return to England, he was offered a Commission in the Army. This he declined, having a family and no private means. He then received an appointment in the Imperial Customs in the West Indies, and on the abolition of that Establishment was appointed Sub-Treasurer of St Kitts. From St Kitts he was in 1858 promoted by the Governor in Chief of the Leeward Islands to the appointment in Antigua which he at present fills - the salary of which is £300 a year.
