Matter of Surprise to His Excellency

that you should wish to resign now any more than during the past 7 months. But as you have casually referred to the Inquiry I mention, His Excellency thinks it right that it should be pointed out to you that if the result of that Inquiry be favorable to you, every consideration will be given to your pecuniary Embarassment,

and if unfavorable, your resignation and not dismissal will follow.

In the meantime His Excellency is ready to discontinue your Stoppages till the conclusion of the Inquiry, but declines, on public grounds as well as in justice to yourself, to accept your resignation at this stage of proceedings.
