In obedience to instructions contained in your Letter No. 582, I have the honor to report for the information of His Excellency the Governor that I called upon Mr. Caldwell the 2nd instant at his private residence, whither the chest was removed for greater security.
I thoroughly examined the outside and, finding no marks of violence used in extracting its late contents,
