me at once to select some

to select some police runners

to accompany the Officer Hsieh, to the different places

named in the depositions, and to arrest and securely guard

the Criminal, but if the latter should have escaped, to bring the whole of his family for interrogation. Copies of depositions

were annexed to this despatch in conformity with the terms of which I

at once selected a party of police

to accompany the Officer. He proceeded in his search,

and at the same time wrote:

with all speed to Wang, the magistrate

of Heav-shan to appoint an Officer

in command

of a party of police who should assist in making diligent search in the locality known as

Ja chi-tow in the Heav-shan District, and not to permit the escape

of the Criminal.

In addition to this, as the documents annexed to my instructions stated the locality as being on the border of the Heav-shan and Sin-hwei Districts, so that success

could not be expected

unless both intelligent

and experienced,

an Officer practiced in the pursuit of Criminals, and well acquainted with the locality,

was appointed for the service in question,

I wrote to the Military Authorities to appoint Captain Chiang-yun pas, of the Chiang-min station, to co-operate with the Officer Hsieh.
