in their letter dated Berlin 5th October last -
I have the honour to observe that, the Lot in question was submitted to public competition, it is admirably situated, which private parties desirous of obtaining, were prepared to pay. I was therefore, under the circumstances, averse to recommend His Excellency The Governor to remit the rental on that particular lot, (notwithstanding that the objects for which the lot was purchased are beneficial and charitable) for it places the public at large at serious disadvantage and had that lot been applied for previous to its sale, I should not have felt myself justified in advising it to be given thus when such is obtained at public Auction and forms a portion of regular revenue of the Colony.
