I have yours of the 25th and congratulate you on the prospect which you now have, through the liberality of Mr. Grinnell, of sending out an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin and his crew. I hope your persevering exertions will soon accomplish that noble undertaking, and that they may be crowned with the success which they deserve.
I shall be happy to do all that I can with propriety towards enlisting the government in the enterprise, to the extent you propose; but it is not in my power to render any other aid to that end, than the expression of my good wishes.
As far as they may go, you may expect that whatever assistance may be exerted to advance and promote the cause, certainly in the cause, you may expect there to be exerted to advance & promote it.
