I have the honor to request that you will represent to His Royal Highness the General Commanding in Chief the very great inconvenience that is being constantly experienced from Officers arriving in this Command, bringing with them large amounts of Public Money in Foreign Coin, by which a great loss is sustained by the Treasury without there being any necessity for such loss.
The loss is considerable. At the present moment there is upwards of £10,000 in Sovereigns and Rupees lying in the Commissariat Chest here from the above cause. Should this money be disposed of here, the loss to Government will be 2½ percent on every Rupee and one shilling on every Sovereign. Every Regiment recently arrived here has brought Public Money to be exchanged, and I would beg to remark...
