Dear Doctor, Dear Sir.

I am in receipt of your

letter

directed to the late Captain D. A Brown,

and in the absence of Captain Thomas Sullivan

and at the request of Robert

undertake the painful

duty of informing you

that poor Brown

drowned

at his last

duty

numbered with the dead.

He

was

pilot of

the Bremen Bark Leind in the dreadful

gale of the 29th August last, in which the ship became a

total wreck, with Captain Me Can, mate, 30 Chinese passengers

drowned

out of 41 were

all the crew, save

and

one seaman;

fragment of a body

lost

and not a body found of any

the deceased to mark the dreadful

fate. I was formerly a friend & partner

in pilotting with the deceased in the following business, and it is with painful

feeling I record his untimely and
