that any attempt to obtain

new Treaty arrangement with China, if such be the result of H[er] M[ajesty's] Special Embassy,

the cession of the

Kowloon Peninsula might be attended

with inconvenience, and that the

mode of effecting

least objectionable mode

that object wd be to obtain the

in lieu of

cession by purchase in

what may

be deemed as

portion of the indemnity

demanded from China.
