at the request of Admiralty Hope, that; as the Force would be principally aboard ship, the Battalion of Royal Marines in Canton should be selected for this duty, made up by a Company of Royal Engineers of the number required. I conclude, however, that before the time allowed can expire about the first week of April, I shall have been superseded in the Command.
Command; but should I not have been so relieved by any fatality, I shall have worked myself fully acquainted with the state of the garrison, as to troops and defences before embarking any portion of the force in the enterprise. At the same time I would express to you my firm conviction that everything possible will be taken and foreseen by the Admiral Commanding.
