Obtain the necessary Certificate from Hong Kong if the authorities consider that such a certificate ought to have been given.

I am to instruct you to communicate his decision to you.

The original Agreement with Dr. Niblett of the 29th July 1866 is still in force.

In reply to your letter of the 8th instant containing instructions how to act regarding the Duke of Vergrotten's claim for £200.

I have the honour to request that this letter, and the enclosed copies, be forwarded to His Grace, and most respectfully submit that they clearly prove that I did not leave the Colony without leave, and further relinquished his office that I was unable through illness to perform my duty, and therefore not liable under the agreement for the amount claimed.

I may add that the appointment, though given to me as a promotion to my former position, was a great loss to me, for soon after my arrival in the Colony my wife was taken ill.

Royal Colonial Office, Hongkong Island 13th May 1869.

Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 30th April 1869.

To His Excellency Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell, K.C.M.G., &c., &c., &c.

[... Adelphi Jenner ... Colonial Secretary]
