Perhaps Mr. Taylor and Mr. G. Berkeley should be granted leave periodically to absent themselves from their duties in the department for the sake of their health.

a relaxation...

do not think that the quantum of leave in the Australian colonies is generally followed in the W. Indies, where officials are generally overworked & relaxation for business journeys is allowed.

If required, in this case, a change of climate in a short time to do them much good, but they might benefit highly from a well-paid leave.

As they are not deterred by the expense, there might be some difficulty in granting leave often, & there might be difficulty in arranging their duties to be taken over by the Senior Officer.

I think, with Mr. Taylor, that Dr. D. Robinson's application should not be made the occasion for establishing any general rule for the subject. Hong Kong is evidently exceptional.

The Governor states that all Europeans on the Island are compelled to leave for a certain time during the summer; the difficulties are such that it is hard for him to do so on his salary, except for a very brief period.

It would be just to allow some compensation for the expense incurred without any allowance.
