and of course,
unconditionally.
This man, as stated elsewhere, was well known to some of
Officers and several of the
the Off
crew on board the "Elbe", and
the Lieutenant in charge therefore had no
hesitation
in taking him into custody pending the arrival of his
superior Officer.
This
late in the
afternoon,
on Friday morning an Officer was at
once sent on board the Saucho
Pauza to inform the Master of that vessel of what
had taken place and requesting him to give up the clothes of the deserter. An indignant refusal was the only reply accompanied by a violent demand,
demand for the instant return of the man
to his vessel.
On the afternoon of that
day the Harbor Master
addressed a letter to the
Commanding Officer of the "Elbe" conveying a request to hand over the delinquent to the Policeman in charge of the letter, in order to have him tried at the American
