I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 13th inst., repeating directions already received in a letter from Colonial Office dated 26th July, also enclosing copy of a letter from Art Murdock to Sir H. Rogers where my measurement of the British ship "whire..." in November last is pronounced to be improper, also informing that His Excellency the Governor will be pleased to receive any explanations I can give to be reported on, and in reply I beg to state that I regret exceedingly that I should have misunderstood the correct measurement. I will therefore, with your permission, state in writing what I have already verbally explained some months previously to His Excellency regarding the mistake made in the measurement of the "Aryl George".
When Sir John Bowring did me the honor to appoint me Government Surveyor, I applied to my predecessor, Captain Stall, for information relative to that portion of my duty measuring ships for Emigrants, and was informed that specific instructions had been given to him, but he said he had never received any, and he did not think there were any, but he said he should be happy to accompany me on board...
