The law was strong enough to punish Offenders, and would be strictly enforced by the Government.
The Defendants having pleaded Guilty, the accompanying affidavits in mitigation of punishment were put in, and I then addressed the Defendants, pointing out the illegality of the act in which they had been engaged, and warning them and all other persons that after this public proceeding the excuse of ignorance would not be accepted, but that the stringent provision of the law would be strictly enforced against all offenders. I then called upon them to enter into the heavy sureties stated in my notes to appear for judgment when called upon.
