The Plea Ava upset - and the court and myself having spent clearly three to four hours in endeavouring to shew Mr. Murrow how to frame his plea, leave and time were given him to amend and he was advised to apply to Mr. Pollard on his return from Shanghai (whither that gentleman had gone some weeks before) to ascertain whether he could obtain his services as Counsel.

A few days later Mr. Pollard returned and it was arranged between all parties that Mr. Caldwell should withdraw his retainer and that Mr. Murrow should have Mr. Pollard to prepare his pleas and advise him in the matter, but Mr. Caldwell objected to allow Mr. Pollard to address the Jury against him, and for the defence (considering the result of some late cases and the general temper of many who are on the Jury list) I am not one whit surprised, which I cannot find fault with.

Matters being so arranged, the Pleas were prepared by Mr. Pollard and I must say they were better than before.
