be gathered from the fact that with

the exceptions of the present occupant

Not one

of the tens of senior officers enumerated

by me, gentlemen having held positions

of responsibility in the Colony

is now alive.

In the month of

December last,

the official Members of the Legislative

Council reported.

That it appeared beyond question that the

salaries of most

of the Chief Officers

of Government, from His Excellency the Governor downwards, should be

increased.

And although that

Committee has not made

further Report, I have the

authority of all its Members individually for saying that in their opinion My salary might fairly be fixed at £800, with private practice –

I shared these views with

five other senior

officers.

I should not have presumed to

refer to those

Gentlemen, but their Kindness, which is

entirely within

the supreme executive power,

is the only

matter entirely within

their control.

They are official Members of

The Legislative Council, large contributors

to the taxes of the Colony,

and merchants

of the greatest experience, intimately connected and acquainted with the

affairs of the Colony -

When I first mentioned

the subject of private practice to His Excellency the Governor, he intimated to me that if my application were acceded to I must expect reduction to be made in

my Salary-

but I never anticipated that that reduction would be to the

extent of

£300

a year.

What I venture to ask of Your Grace is, either that my Salary

remain
