be gathered from the fact that with
the exceptions of the present occupant
Not one
of the tens of senior officers enumerated
by me, gentlemen having held positions
of responsibility in the Colony
is now alive.
In the month of
December last,
the official Members of the Legislative
Council reported.
That it appeared beyond question that the
salaries of most
of the Chief Officers
of Government, from His Excellency the Governor downwards, should be
increased.
And although that
Committee has not made
further Report, I have the
authority of all its Members individually for saying that in their opinion My salary might fairly be fixed at £800, with private practice –
I shared these views with
five other senior
officers.
I should not have presumed to
refer to those
Gentlemen, but their Kindness, which is
entirely within
the supreme executive power,
is the only
matter entirely within
their control.
They are official Members of
The Legislative Council, large contributors
to the taxes of the Colony,
and merchants
of the greatest experience, intimately connected and acquainted with the
affairs of the Colony -
When I first mentioned
the subject of private practice to His Excellency the Governor, he intimated to me that if my application were acceded to I must expect reduction to be made in
my Salary-
but I never anticipated that that reduction would be to the
extent of
£300
a year.
What I venture to ask of Your Grace is, either that my Salary
