the Havana August 1858. I left Charlestown in November 1858 for Liverpool. when I left Swatow
I had on board 274 Coolies.– I landed 139 at Havana, - The Consignees at Havana Complained of the small number landed, - I lost the freight on those that died, - freight was payable in Havana,- freight was $75 per head. - I think the Doctor (Plaintiff) had to do with their deaths, the opium Killed a lot of them on board, -. I paid him (Plaintiff) $60 in Hong Kong, $20 at Swatow, $100 at the Havana, and I gave the Mate some money ($16) at Charlestown which he asked for, for the Doctor, - as far as my knowledge goes he (the Plaintiff) was a very bad Doctor. many Circumstances made me think so, the worst was close to the Havana, the Plaintiff Came and told me of one of them being dead, he asked leave to throw him overboard, only three Coolies were alive that smoked opium, - I would have brought the Plaintiff here with me if he had remained on board.
