Viva voce examination of Johan Normann and Johannes Herschin. —

Christian Lawson sworn as Interpreter.

John Normann sworn states, I am interested in this cause, - the Defendant was engaged by me in December 1857 as Master of the Norwegian Barque Norma. I went from Hongkong to Swatow in the course of that month. - I look at Swatow I loaded a Cargo of Coolies on board bound for Havana, - The Plaintiff in this cause went with me on that occasion, – he went as Doctor. I engaged him in Hongkong. I made a written agreement (signed) Sch: bes. Norsenauen with him, - I gave him some instructions on going on board as to take care that no Chinese spills for lights, or opium on board, I told him in "Pidgin English". It was in Swatow I gave him the instructions above mentioned. - The mate and some of the crew and an Interpreter were present. I spoke to him more than once, - one time another those people must have heard me. - Before I spoke to the Plaintiff about opium I had found some of the Interpreter's; when I found the Interpreter's Opium I took it down to the cabin.

(Sgd) Joh. Geo. Norman
